With day after day of high cash 'prices, few producers were thinking about hedging to covet the risk on four- and five-weight calves in late spring. Why would they, with dollar 125 to dollar 130/cwt guaranteed at about every sale barn? Still, with the possibilities of another case of bovine spongifoim encephalo-pathy (BSE) turning up in the U.S, and corn prices climbing evei higher, some sort of price protection may be needed, says Ron Plain, University of Missouri (UM) agricultural economist.
