In their May article on algal taste and odour risk, Phillippa Pearson and Rupert Perkins say that the geosmin and MIB have no known associated risks. However, these are not the only materials produced by cyanobacteria. Highly toxic hepatic and neurodegenerative chemicals such as beta-N-methylamino-alanine are released into the water as the algae die and deaths have occurred with animals who drink from water around a reservoir with a significant bloom.
