Pulse oximetry is one of the -most commonly employed monitoring modalities in a clinical setting, measuring the amount of saturated haemoglobin (SpO_2) in arterial blood. In most cases, SpO_2 values are consistent with invasively sampled arterial blood (SaO_2) values to within a few percent. In some limited conditions, however, including the Trendelenburg position, SpO_2 readings can represent a mixture of the arterial and venous oxygen saturation due to increased venous pulsation. This potential limitation of the digit sensor is not widely known amongst anaesthetists, having only previously been reported with earlobe and forehead sensors.
