In September, to packed houses of stock analysts in New York and London, George Poste, SmithKline Beecham's (SB, King of Prussia, PA) president of research and development, unveiled SB's "discovery pipeline." SB's pipeline is a drug discovery machine--part technology, part information, and part brain power--linking genomics to combinatorial chemistry, robotic "smart screening,"bioinformatics, and academic alliances.
