152 U.S. biopharmaceutical firms lose 1.3 billion dollar

ALLENTOWN. Pern.—Overall, U.S. firms benefited handsomely in 1994 from a growing economy and corporate-restructuring efforts, with company profits rising an average of 40%. In contrast, only 20 of the 152 biopharmaceutical firms included in Bio/Technology's survey of i 994 year-end results shared in this profit-making frenzy (Table 4). In all, these 152 biopharmaceutical firms reported a loss of 1.3 billion dollar last year, or an average loss of 8.7 million dollar per firm, a 23% improvement over 1993's profit figures.
