The European Stress Physiology and Climate Experiment-project 1: wheat (ESPACE-wheat): introduction, aims and methodology.

The ESPACE-wheat project, established in 1994 and funded by the Commission of the European Communities, comprises a Europe-wide experimental and modelling study to investigate the effects on wheat of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and ofenvironmental stresses such as ozone and water and nutrient shortages under different climatic conditions. The experimental network and the standard protocol set-up for the assessments which served to improve and to validate process-oriented wheat growth simulation models are described.
