The biotechnology industry is on its way to becoming a farm team system that chums out operating subsidiaries for large pharmaceutical companies. The majority of biotechnology companies are neither viable nor sustainable on a long-term basis, and thecommon feature or objective that they share seems to be, simply, their necessity to sur vive. For many, this means acquisition. While some see this as an aspect of widespread consolidation in the health-care industry, in reality, it looks more like consumption--and there is no question who is being consumed.
