KNOWN as the land of tropical fruits, Thailand is looking to increase its fresh produce exports to Europe and North America, as traditional Asian markets become more difficult to penetrate and less economically viable. According to government figures,78 per cent of Thailand's top export items longan, durian, mango and lychee went to Asia in 2004, with China taking over 30 per cent, Asean countries 25 per cent, Hong Kong 18 per cent and Japan 5 per cent. The remaining volume was shared between the Middle East, Europe and North America.
