Saveol heads south: Saveol is leading the way for French tomato growers, adding production in the south of France to provide all year availability and continuing with its packaging innovations

In 2008, tomato specialist Saveol sold 70,000 tonnes of tomatoes, according to managing director Richard Nouhaud, in addition to 1,200 tonnes of strawberries and 20 tonnes of raspberries. "Production was good last year," he says, "and returns were much improved compared to previous years. The market has been difficult due to the bad weather over the summer, which led to a general drop in tomato consumption." The company exports around 20 per cent of its production, 19 per cent of which goes to the German market. "We sell both to supermarkets and to wholesalers," continues Mr Nouhaud, "and we are the French market leader for tomatoes in terms of turnover."
