Mixed bag for Belgian tomatoes

While sales of vine vanities reportedly did reasonably well in 2008, Belgium's loose tomato returns were down last year, according to industry association LAVA. Last year proved to be a mixed one for Belgian tomatoes. According to Maarten De Moor, executive director of LAVA, the umbrella cooperative association of Flandria auctions, a combination of adverse weather conditions and increased supply in Europe affected tomatoes and a number of other vegetable crops, with overall turnover for vegetables down as a result.
