The most active formation of gaseous nitrogen compounds in soddy-podzolic soil under corn plants was observed when the highest rate of mineral nitrogen was applied as NPK fertilizer. The fraction of nitrogen monoxide in the final denitrification products reached 80%. Actual nitrogen monoxide loss from the soil was measured for the first time under experimental conditions: it reached 1.3 #mu#g N-NO_2g~(-1) day~(-1) in the middle of the vegetation period. The addition of zeolite to ammonium nitrate decreased the rate of nitrogen monoxide formation during the month after fertilization; later on, this effect was not observed.
