Agrogenic Evolution of Drained Peat Soils

The results of 125 long-term experiments (from 1913 to 1999) on organic matter losses in differently utilized drained peat soils of Belarus are summarized. The regularities of the morphological structure of the peat and peat horizons transforming in the process of the agrogenic evolution of peat soils were revealed. Four stages of the agrogenic evolution of the soils were distinguished: drained peat, peat-mineral, organomineral, and postpeat mineral soils. The main morphological features of these soils and their differences at different stages of the agrogenic evolution are described. A taxonomy of the soils formed at the different stages of the peat degradation is suggested.
