The system of parameters of the soil humus status is an indispensable criterion of soil and land evaluation.Two systems of characteristics of soil humus status are represented in this paper.The revised system envisages a larger number of grades for all characteristics of soil humus status,and it includes some new characteristics:humification index(HI)and benzoic index(a).The values characterizing the conditions of humifi-cation are also considered:the duration of the biological activity period(PBA)and the pH of the water extract.The revised and specified system makes it possible to characterize the soil humus status and examine the mechanisms of humus accumulation and formation.
