In a sugar beet processing plant, high loads and very high temperatures are encountered in the pelleting press and the steam dryer, respectively. Spherical roller bearings in these applications require a grease with excellent high temperature capabilities, as well as balanced performance in load carrying, water resistance, corrosion protection and pumpability in central lubrication systems. In addition, many mills desire (or are required by regulation) to use USDA quality lubricants, so H1 registration was deemed critical in this product's development targets. An H1 polyurea grease utilising a blend of synthetic base fluids was developed to meet these challenging performance targets. Field testing of this experimental product demonstrated excellent performance compared to both an aluminium complex H1 grease and a high temperature synthetic base fluid clay grease containing molybdenum disulfide. The polyurea grease showed excellent pumpability, maintained its consistency and did not bleed, withstood temperatures up to 150C, and provided excellent sealing against contamination. There were no bearing failures and the bearings showed no evidence of race or cage wear.
