Implications of REACh From a grease producer's perspective

At the ELGI Members' Forum immediately following last year's AGM in Edinburgh, one of the more important topics raised was an eventual grease industry response to the proposed REACh legislations. The whole issue of REACh had been highlighted at the AGM itself through the excellent contribution of Andrew Swallow and Laurie Hughes from Uniqema. At that point in time there only seemed to be a vague notion of what all this really meant, but the general consensus was that we (the ELGI) should start to gather the necessary information and try to act as an industry body instead of as a whole array of individual companies. Since AXEL was one of the primary instigators of the proposed activities, we were invited to "present our case" and did so at the July 2005 ELGI Board meeting in Amsterdam. We were then subsequently asked to represent the ELGI at the British Lubricants Federation meeting in Swindon, UK on September 14th and this particular presentation was first prepared in response to that. It was also used as an introductory contribution at the first ELGI REACh meeting in Amsterdam on October 5th. There have been a number of different meetings within the ELGI since then including the formation of a "consortium" to address the questions concerning the common testing of soaps used in grease manufacturing (OSOR). The basic concerns and implications are, however, still relatively unchanged and the presentation hopefully still valid and relevant for the great majority of the membership of the ELGI.
