Bananas remain Costa Rica's largest agricultural export item and with an industry based on high productivity, social responsibility and environmental preservation, the Central American nation maintains an extremely competitive position on the global market. Despite its access challenges, the European Union (ED) ranks as the leading importer, accounting for 49.9 per cent of Costa Rica's banana exports in 2007/08. With an already solid 19 per cent share of the EU market, the country soon hopes to shore up its position in the region with this year's highly anticipated conclusion to the banana import tariff dispute.
