Mexican bananas make progress in eastern Europe: Mexico's banana exporters are achieving good results in Hungary and Bulgaria, which in turn is encouraging new developments within the Mexican banana industry

BANANAS have been exported from Mexico since 1906. Indeed, in 1937 Mexico was the leading banana exporting country in the world, accounting for 15 per cent of global production and holding a 25 per cent share of the US market. The situation today is very different. The 80,000 ha that were planted in the leading production state of Tabasco have been reduced to 7,000, but new opportunities in eastern Europe in particular are encouraging new developments within the Mexican banana industry.
