The content of bitumoids in zonal soils of European Russia

Unpolluted soils were studied in a range of natural zones from southern taiga to semidesert. The content of natural bituminous substances was measured by the luminescent method in hexane and chloroform extracts from upper soil horizons. The content of chloroform-soluble bituminous substances was found to correlate with the humus content and the C-ha : C-fa ratio. The results are regarded as a contribution to the database on native bituminous substances in zonal soils, which is indispensable for an adequate assessment of soil contamination by oil and oil products.
