Salt-affected soils in the Transbaikal region are mainly represented by hydromorphic and semihydromorphic soil groups.Automorphic salt-affected soils are less frequent and do not occupy considerable areas.Salt-affected soils are confined to steppe and dry steppe ecosystems that occupy intermontane depressions. The geography and genesis of salt-affected soils in the westrn part of theTransbaikal region are discussed. It is argued that soil salinization is favored by the cryoarid climate in combination with the presence of permafrost, uneven surface topography, and the impact of saline ground water on the soil profile.
