Natural restoration of the microbiological properties of soddy-podzolic soil of fallow land

The microbiological status of a soddy-podzolic soil that was removed from agricultural use (NPK and lime were applied for 40 years) was studied. The microbiological properties were assessed according to three groups of parameters: (1) the activity of nitrogen fixation, denitrification, and CO2 and CH4 emission; (2) the functional diversity of the microorganisms in the soil; and (3) the population and structure of the microbial complex. All the variants of the long-term natural restoration were similar according to the activity of the denitrification, nitrogen fixation, respiration, and methanogenesis. They drastically differed from the soil of an undisturbed (forest) ecosystem in the functional diversity of the microorganisms and the population and structure of the microbial complex. The soil in the variant with lime was restored more slowly than that in the variant with the whole complex of mineral fertilizers.
