摘要

SOUTH Africa is arguably one of the world's oldest fresh produce exporters and if you take a look at the wide range of fruits that are grown across its length and breadth, it is also not hard to understand why it is often called "the land of plenty" Fertile valleys and plains, with almost as many different climatic conditions as you can think of, create a theatre where almost any fruit or vegetable can grow. The earliest inhabitants of this land lived off the berries and bulbs they found growing naturally there. Many centuries later, South Africans were the first to ship their fruits to western Europe, which was a logistical wonder given the technology available to them at the end of the 19th century.
