Sustainability becomes new buzzword in Central America

The Rainforest Alliance's green frog insignia will soon be appearing on pineapples and other tropical fruits, says Chris Wille, chief of sustainable agriculture at the independentconservation group. HAVING successfully completed the certification of Chiquita's Latin American banana operations last year, international conservation group the Rainforest Alliance is now rolling out the standard for other fresh products, including pineapples and citrus. The organisation is in the process of certifying citrus farms belonging to Del Oro in northwestern Costa Rica, while standards covering pineapple production are currently being tested on independent farms in Costa Rica and Panama, with the first consignments bearing the distinctive quality stamp set to arrive on supermarket shelves within a matter ofmonths.
