Angel guides Safmarine vessel: The South African shipping company has been celebrating the appointment of Louise Angel as its youngest and first female ship's Master

At the age of just 29 years old, South Africa's Louise Angel has already set a record for being the youngest Master in shipping company Safmarine's fleet of 19 owned and 39 chartered vessels, but towards the end of last year she also became the firstwoman in the group's history to take command of a Safmarine vessel. Mrs Angel, who is married and lives in Durban, took command of the Safmarine Ngami, a 2,474 TED containership deployed on the South Africa-North America (AMEX) trade, in October 2008. She had also previously became the first female officer to take delivery of a new Safmarine containership, the very one for which she is now responsible.
