HOW is the Almerian export season faring following the situation in December last year? The season was going pretty well during the four months to December 2006 until the problems with the pesticide residues arose. The ensuing crisis has affected notonly pepper exports and it remains to be seen what impact it will have on the 2006/07 season and future campaigns. It is likely that this season's export volume and value will fall below that of 2005/06. On a positive note, there has been less market saturation this season (due to the withdrawal of some Almerian volumes) and therefore we have not experienced the usual price drop during periods of excessive offer. The bad news is that our competitors have benefited when it has been difficult to sell Almerian produce.
