While vegetable seed company Rijk Zwaaris work to develop new productsmay appear focused primarily on the beginning of the supply chain, its latest innovation is aimed squarely at providing appreciable added value at the business end of that chain. Sensational Ingredients, the Dutch group's sixth product line, highlights varieties that score well in terms of taste, nutritional value and, in particular, their suitability for use in processing food preparation and cuisine.Complementing Sensational Flavours and Sensational Snacks, as well as Rijk Zwaan's more account-related Convenience, Organic and Industry product lines, the newrange is designed to offer not only vitamins and minerals, or indeed taste options such as the sweetness of sugar in melons, the bitterness of sesquiterpene lactones in chicory or the spice of capsaicin in chilli peppers, but also attributes that can aidindustrial applications: dry matter in white cabbage for dehydration, for example, betanin in beetroot or carotenoids in carrots. "This is a line of varieties with higher levels of components such as vitamin C or folic acid, for instance, or specific ingredients of interest to the food colourings industry," explains Rijk Zwaan's marketing and business development manager. "These varieties enable you to create and launch added-value products."
