Centralisation to boost Carrefour produce supplies: Carrefour Portugal is developing a central distribution hub for perishables in an effort to accommodate the firm's ambitious expansion plans
CARREFOUR currently ranks as the world's second-largest distribution group, with 6,987 stores on three continents. The French retail giant launched its first Portuguese hypermarket in 1990, and is now present in most of the country's major cities, with eight hypermarkets in total and an annual turnover of 513m EUR. This year, the company is investing 24m EUR in the opening of two further hypermarkets in Portimao and Paces de Ferreira, which will create employment opportunities for 350 people.
