How one of Germany's upmarket, regional retailers is set to place contract farming and local sourcing at the heart of its proposed expansion over the coming years. While two of Germany's retail giants, Edeka and Rewe, have traditionally dominated thesupermarket business while at the same time retaining the financial might required to develop their activities in other, more rapidly expanding parts of the grocery market - mainly hypermarkets and discount chains - investments made in the meantime by specialist neighbourhood operators to improve their store designs, ranges and product quality over the past couple of years are apparently contributing to something of a resurgence in the country's supermarket segment.
