In 1978, Yatvin et al. proposed the concept of temperature-triggered release of a chemotherapeutic drug from the aqueous lumen of temperature-sensitive liposomes (TSLs) composed of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phospatidylcholine (DSPC). The drug remains encapsulated in the inner compartment of the TSLs at body temperature, whereas the drug is released at temperatures close to the melting phase transition temperature (Tm) of the lipid bilayer
