EU/ROMANIA: FISCHER BOEL WARNS AGRICULTURE MINISTER OF 'HUGE JUMP' AHEAD

Romania still has a "huge jump ahead" in agriculture if it is to be ready for EU accession in January 2007, EU Farm Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel warned Romania's new Agriculture Minister Gheorge Flutur during his first visit to Brussels on Februarys. While praising the "huge progress" in agriculture made by the country in the run-up to accession, Mrs Fischer Boel expressed concern at Romania's lack of preparedness to handle EU payments under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). She also said the country must make more efficient use of money from SAPARD the EU programme that hands out agricultural funds to applicant countries.
