TRADE POLICY: COMMISSION SEES RISE IN GLOBAL TRADE DEFENCE MEASURES

The global trend for setting trade defence measures on European Union exports has risen, according to a European Commission report. The report reveals that the measures in place rose from 192 at the end of 2003 to 199 in 2004. The report says the reduction of tariffs and other trade barriers increases the incentive in individual countries to resort to trade defence tactics. A separate WTO report last month said economies around the world were turning regularly to safeguard measures to block imports.
