FOOD COLOURINGS: EU CONCERNED OVER RED DYE SCARE, 12 OTHER EUSTATES CARRYING OUT TESTS

The European Commission requested information from the United Kingdom on February 24 and called 12 other member states to run tests after a banned cancer-causing chemical dye was found in food in the UK. The British food industry is facing the biggestproduct recall ever, with some 580 products - including soups, sauces and ready meals - taken off shop shelves in the UK since February 21, after they were found to contain the banned Sudan red 1 dye. The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) said on March 8 that food firms had withdrawn another 43 products, including some brands of pizza. The FSA and local authorities are still investigating firms allegedly involved in supplying the products.
