EU/ROMANIA/BULGARIA: ROMANIA TO RECEIVE OVER EURO 4.7 BILLION IN EU AGRICULTURE FUNDING

Romania will receive Euro 4.721 billion in total farm support for 2007-2009 after it joins the EU, the Romanian mission to the EU said on June 7. Euro 3.921 billion will be allocated for Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) payments and Euro 0.8 billion will be earmarked for Structural Funds projects paid out of the Guidance part of the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF). Romania provisionally closed the agriculture and budget chapters at an accession conference in Brussels on June4. It still hopes to wrap up the six policy areas still outstanding before the end of the year. Bulgaria provisionally closed the three important negotiation 'chapters' with financial implications, namely those on agriculture, regional policy, and financial and budgetary provisions. This leaves just one of the 30 substantive chapters open for Bulgaria - competition - which could potentially be dealt with at a June 15 Ministerial conference in Luxembourg. Both countries are hoping to finalise accessionnegotiations during 2004 with a view to joining the EU in 2007.
