FISHERIES: PARLIAMENT REJECTS COMMISSION'S VIEW OF HAKE IN DANGER

The European Parliament rejected the European Commission's view that stocks of northern hake were threatened with collapse when it gave its opinion on the hake recovery plan on February 11. Members supported a report by Dominique Souchet (unattached,France) saying that the proposal was flawed because it failed to take recent research on fish numbers into account Political agreement on the hake strategy was reached at the Fisheries Ministers meeting in December so it is unlikely Parliament's views will be taken onboard (see Europe Agri 146).
