EU/WTO/US: FISCHLER CALLS ON AMERICA TO REFORM 'TRADE-DISTORTING' FARM POLICY

Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler on February 20 called on the US to follow the EU's example and reform any trade-distorting aspects of its domestic farm policy. Speaking on a visit to Washington, Mr Fischler said there would be no headway in the WTO's Doha Round unless rich countries, including the US, overhauled their farm subsidies. He also confirmed that the Commission would table specific proposals before the Summer to make the EU's sugar regime "more market-orientated and trade-friendly".
