FARM COUNCIL: AVIAN FLU, PRICE PRESSURE AND ANIMAL WELFARE DOMINATE FEBRUARY SESSION

The European Commission's ban on the import of live birds and eggs from the United States (see article in Section IV) dominated a quiet Farm Council in Brussels on February 24. EU Agriculture Ministers held only one vote, adopting a Regulation (COM(2003) 832) on fish imported at low or no tariffs for the EU fish processing industry (see separate article in this Section), as Member States discussed the price pressure on the dairy and cereal sectors and Germany presented its new draft law on genetically-modified (GM) crops.
