The EU is committed to negotiate a blanced agreement to further liberalise agricultural trade. However, the EU has made it clear that the rules which emerge must be fairand equitable for all. The EU also wants to see non-trade concerns such as the protection of the environment, food safety and quality addressed. The contribution agriculture makes to meeting the wider demands of society, which go beyond the supply of abundant and safe food, must be recognised. Agriculture helps to maintain the environment, the vitality of rural society, biodiversity and other public goods and must be able to continue to do so.
