Pesticides: action network sends open letter to commission

In an open letter sent on November 24 to the European Commissioners responsible for the Environment, Margot Wallstrom, and Health and Consumer Protection, David Byrne, and to the heads of the competent services and scientific committees, the Pesticide Action Network (PAN-Europe and PAN Asia & Pacific), along with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, urges the competent regulatory and scientific committees to review the decision of October 3 on the inclusion of paraquat (a powerful pesticide)in Annex 1 of the Directive on the marketing and use of plant protection products (Directive 91/414/EEC). The organisations say their demand is justified by the fact that this authorisation is used by industry to challenge decisions taken in third countries to protect human health and the environment.
