ENVIRONMENT: POLICY REVIEW URGES SPEEDIER REFORMS

In its first Environment Policy Review, adopted on December 3, the European Commission assesses the progress and the problems encountered since 2001 and highlights current priority issues in the EU and national environmental policies. In its Review for 2003, the Commission emphasises the need to speed up the pace of reforms to improve the environment in Europe and across the world and to decouple economic growth from environmental pressures in line with the objectives set down in the EU's 6th ActionProgramme on the Environment and the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. The Commission says that this report, which is to become an annual event, will enable it to ensure the follow-up and monitoring of EU policy and to remedy its main failings.
