FOOD SAFETY: FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITY PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE OVER FIRST TWO YEARS

The management board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) took stock of the Authority's first two years of activity on June 22, on the basis of a preliminary report commissioned from an independent consultant (1). While the expectations of keycustomers and stakeholders regarding the role of EFSA vary, the report presents a generally positive view of the Authority's first few months of activity. The quality of scientific opinions is judged to be high, communications have significantly improved and increased co-operation with Member States is valued. For some, however, the launch of EFSA activities has been too slow. In addition to reviewing the progress made to-date, the EFSA board of management, staging its 15th meeting since its establishment in July 2002, adopted plans to support the Authority's future developments and move to Parma, and adopted a pro-active approach related to animal testing and welfare. Board members also re-elected the current Chair, Stuart Slorach, for a second 2-year term, as well as the two vice-Chairs, Catherine Geslain-Laneelle and Deirdre Hutton.
