The European Commission adopted on July 20 measures to tackle illegal logging across the world through new regulations and partnerships with key wood-producing countries. The Commission's Regulation and a Recommendation for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) aims to ensure that wood exports are not illegal plundered from the world's priceless rainforests. The plan includes support for improved governance in wood-producing countries, voluntary partnerships with wood-producing countries to ensure only legally harvested timber enters the EU market. The measures include introducing laws on harvesting, and implementing control measures to ensure that legislation is respected, and a licensing scheme ensuring that timber is only admittedto the EU markets if certified by the proposed scheme.
