摘要

The EU broke international trade rules byjapplying an effective moratorium on new marketing authorisations of genetically-modified organisms between 1999 and 2003, the World Trade Organisation said on February 7. The world trade watchdog's preliminaryruling on a complaint by the United States, Canada and Argentina against the EU's GMO authorisation procedures was immediately welcomed by the United States, but EU officials said it has no bearing on current legislation since the de facto moratorium was lifted in 2004. The dispute reveals the deep gulf over genetic engineering between the US and the EU: while GM-products are widely used in food in the US, 70% of Europeans say they do not trust them.
