White better legislation will undoubtedly help the European Commission to achieve its social, economic and environmental objectives, it should nevertheless maintain the balance between the three pillars of sustainable development. EU Environment Ministers meeting in Council in Luxembourg on October 17 issued a serious warning that while acknowledging the need to simplify, modernise and restructure the EU's legal and regulatory excess, it is stiff necessary to ensure that the process does not result in any weakening of environmental policy and protection standards.
