FOODS FEED SAFETY: EFSA PANEL LOOKS AT USE OF IODINE IN ANIMAL FEED SUPPLEMENTS

Although the main condition caused by iodine deficiency in humans, endemic goiter (severe enlargement of the thyroid gland), is virtually unheard of in developed countries nowadays, sub-clinical iodine deficiency may still be an underlying problem inlarge parts of Western and Central Europe. But not enough is known about iodine concentrations, says the European Food Safety Authority. Its Panel on additives and products or substances used in animal feed (FEEDAP) says in a recent advisory Opinion forthe European Commission there is a need for more data and more up-to-date information on iodine requirements and tolerance in farm animals (dose-response relationships and biomarkers of iodine supply) as well as on the actual impact of iodine supplements in animal feed on total iodine dietary intake of humans.
