The young boy carrying the tiny Grey Crowned Crane chick along the dusty track moves eagerly towards his home. This is a simple hut close to the track, with ground swept clean and birds swooping overhead. In the distance, a beautiful view from his door, is the majestic Franklin Vlei towards Koks-tad. In the yard, a small cage holds five Rock Pigeons, agitated and cramped. A car stops beside him. The farmer's wife asks him where he got that crane chick from and where he is going witl it. He does not answer. She offers him R40. He declines. There is another Umlungu (local word for white person) further away who will give him R300 for this bird! She asks him who this is, but again he does not answer. The crane chick is listless and thin. After some persuasion, he gives it to her for R50.
