Traditional uses of pteridophytes among Baiga tribes of Amarkantak, Anuppur district, M.P.

The medicinal properties of 17 species of pteridophytes occurring in tribal localities in the Amarkantak forest range in Anuppur district, Madhya Pradesh, India, are presented. These plants, which belong to 15 genera and 12 families, are used by Baiga tribes for their anthelmintic, antidote and aphrodisiac properties, and for their potential effect against caries, cold, cough, diarrhoea, diuretic, dysentery, eye diseases, genital diseases, headache, impotency, jaundice, kidney diseases, leprosy, litholyte, malaria, menorrhagea, piles, scrofula, skin diseases, sore throat, stomach disorders and tuberculosis. Information on the parts of the plant used, methodologies involved in drug preparation, doses and modes of drug administration is included.
