On hearing I had become president of the RJN a friend stated, "What is there left to do in navigation now it has been solved by GPS"? Within a few months the world would be stunned by the disappearance of flight MH-370. The media wondered how an aircraft could be lost to air traffic control when we all can track our own iPads. The difficulty of global navigation and surveillance was simply not appreciated. Furthermore, it appeared that there was little public interest in navigation. Contrary to the title of our magazine, Navigation was not News.
