Hydroxyzine hydrocholoride has been shown to be an active bronchodilator agent. Specific airway conductance was increased more than 50 of control values in asthmatic subjects and the effect lasts for at least four hours. Because of this action it is suggested that it be the preferred premedication for patients with bronchospasticdisease undergoing surgery. The results indicate it should be given a clinical trial in ambulatory patients for controlling asthmatic attacks. Its value lies in the minimal adverse effects which are appreciable when compared with the usual bronchodilator agents. Drowsiness is the main adverse reaction. Cardiovascular or metabolic effects are absent and thus management of the patient is simpler.
