A 35 years' history of aquifer under- ground gas storages offers an opportu-nity to evaluate theoretical and practical im-plications of gas storage in producing hori-zons. Displacement of gas-water flows in sandsto-nepore space is in the centre of attention of Buckley-Leverett theory. It was discovered that multiple gas-water drive with an alter-nating direction of current could lead to changes in relative permeability and, hence, to the reduction of active gas volumes. The working hypothesis based on an adopted drive theory offers an explanationfor the changing gas storage behaviour observed. The effect of the phase dispersion in the pore Space results in changes of the active / cushion gas volumes which gives groundfor"immobile gas" assumptions. An analytic approach makes it possible to evaluate all the production and commercial-ly relevant aspects.
