Virent and Virdia Convert Cellulosic Pine Tree Sugars to Fuel

Virent Inc. and Virdia, formerly HCL CleanTech, have suc- cessfully converted cellulosic pine tree sugars to drop-in hydrocarbon fuels within the BIRD Energy project, a joint program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Is- raeli Ministry of National Infrastructure and the BIRD Foun- dation. The project started in January 2011 and successfully demonstrated Virdia’s deconstruction process generates high-quality sugars from cellulosic biomass, which were converted to fuel via Virent’s BioForming process.
