I have always been an equestrian, and many years ago I owned a number of wonderful horses. But after I lost my favorite horse in a tragedy, I decided to quit. Cold turkey. I gave away my horse books, let my subscriptions lapse and put my riding equipment in storage. I spent the next 15 years building a teaching career and learning to become the first mate on a vintage 3 0-foot yacht. The aging, elegant sailboat had come with my new husband, Garry.
